By Charlie Brown, Delmar, DE – Richard Jarvis, Jr. got some help from a late race caution which negated a pass by Ricky Elliott and was able to hold off Elliott on the restart to go on to the win in the 20-lap Super Late Model feature Saturday night at Delaware International.
Jon Callaway looked strong for the second week in a row putting the Gary Simpson late model out front at the start of the feature. Donald Lingo, Jr. ran in second with Rick Whaley moving by Richard Jarvis, Jr. for third. By lap four, Ricky Elliott had charged from his tenth starting spot into the top five.
Callaway built a comfortable lead but had a close call on lap eight when a lapped car slowed in front of his as he came off the fourth turn. At the halfway sign the top five were Callaway, Jarvis, Whaley, Elliott and Lingo.
With the race staying under the green, Callaway was in heavy traffic and Jarvis was able to rapidly close the gap. Jarvis moved into the lead just as the first yellow flew on lap fourteen when Lingo slowed to a stop and David Hill headed to the pits.
On the restart, Elliott worked into second with Whaley following into third. The caution was out again on lap 16 when Whaley rolled to a stop. Elliott pulled even with Jarvis on the restart with the two making contact coming off the second turn and Elliott taking the lead.
The pass was erased when the caution came out before the lap was completed as Bob Geiger rolled to a stop. On the restart, Jarvis closed the bottom line and was able to hold off Elliott on the final two laps to take his third win of the season in the Mid Coastal Siding/Rocket. Elliott finished a close second with Callaway third. Fourth went to David Pettyjohn with Ray Davis, Jr. rounding out the top five. Heats were won by Callaway and Jarvis.
“Everything worked out in our favor here,” smiled Jarvis. “We still need to make some adjustments to get ready for Thursday night (World of Outlaw show) but we are definitely in the ballpark.”
Fifteen year old Tyler Reed set the pace at the start of the 15-lap Crate Model feature with Barry Beauchamp giving chase along with Joe Warren. As Reed took advantage of a clear track ahead the battle for second added Jack Mullins.
Warren broke free to take second and wasted no time in taking the point on lap seven. At the halfway sign the top five were Warren, Reed, Beauchamp, Mullins and Chris Jestice. Cautions on laps 11 through 14 kept Warren from building a lead.
The final lap shoot out was all Warren as he recorded his second straight win in the Big Fish Grill/Lazer. Reed finished a personal best in second with Beauchamp third. Sparky White came on strong to finish in fourth and Justin Breeding rounded out the top five. Fast time was set by Kelly Putz in qualifying.
The Slide for 5 final saw Wayne White, Jr. jump out to the early lead with Bryan Nailor in second. Dylan Betts slid his way to the front for laps three and four but could not hold off Nailor.
Nailor, despite a front tire that was smoking badly due to the front fender rubbing on it but the tire stayed up and Nailor took the win which was worth $133 in memory of Kyle Dixon who drove the No. 133. Betts finished in second with Dave Redick third, Matt Carmean fourth and Jordan Herbert fifth.
